ICS students are encouraged to study abroad. However, it is critical that students plan ahead well in advance of departure. Review the important info below.

1. Apply to Your Study Abroad Program

  • Visit the Study Abroad Center for more information.
  • Students are recommended to study abroad between their 1st and 3rd year.
  • Summer study abroad programs work best for timely academic planning.

2. Start Planning Your Courses

  • Are you planning to take major, GE, or elective courses? Use the Catalogue to find similar courses.
  • Schedule an appointment to meet with a counselor. This is optional for all students but highly recommended for those going abroad in their final year.

3. Request a Syllabi Review

  • You can begin this process once you have been accepted to your program and have a robust syllabus of the course(s).
  • Submit the “Request Study Abroad Syllabus Review” on our Petitions page (estimated processing time is 3-4 weeks). Syllabus reviews are not guaranteed to be approved. Therefore it is important to have a back up plan to complete requirements after returning from abroad.

4. When You Return

  • Once your units are posted on your transcript, you can request a Degreeworks update (if you were approved for GE or major credit through a syllabus review)

Please note:

  • Students can submit the ICS Academic Planning Form for academic planning purposes. This form is optional. If you have questions about the form or would like to go over it after submitting it, then please book an appointment with us here.
  • ICS highly discourages students going abroad in their final 2 quarters as it could delay degree certification and affect job offers. Grades can take up to 90 days to process and you would not be able to graduate until this process is complete (typically the quarter after you return). It is not possible to graduate in the same term you went abroad. Please submit a graduation application for at least one quarter after returning from abroad by going to Student Access> Applications> Graduation.
  • For Business Information Management (BIM) students: All core MGMT courses must be taken at UCI.
