Why take this exam?
- You may have taken an equivalent course, but the course may not be officially articulated on Assist.org. This exam is recommended if you have substantial experience in the programming language and can demonstrate proficiency to get credit for ICS 31 and/or 45J.
- Credit by exams are not mandatory.
- There is no academic penalty if you do not do well on the exam. You will be given the option to accept or deny your grade. If you accept the grade, it will be posted on your transcript.
- Students cannot take the ICS Credit by Exam to replace a grade they previously earned by taking the course.
Who is eligible to take the credit by exam?
- Summer Exams: For the ICS 31 and 45J exams, new ICS students will receive priority in taking the exam. The final two exam dates will be opened to all new and continuing UCI students.
- Fall Exam: ICS 45J is the only exam offered in the Fall quarter. This exam will only be eligible to ICS students.
What is the exam format?
- All Canvas exams will open at 10 am PT on the scheduled test date and will remain open for 24 hours. The access code will be mailed to your UCI email on the test date approximately half an hour before the exam window opens. Please contact the testing center at testcenter@uci.edu if you did not receive this email. Allow yourself enough time to complete the exam in one sitting.
- Time limit will vary by exam.
- You must access the exam using your UCInetID and password.
- It is not an open book or open note exam.
- We adhere to strict academic honesty guidelines. Incidents of cheating will be reported to the campus.
- All exams are monitored by Respondus Lockdown Browser. You will need a webcam, uninterrupted internet connection, photo ID, and a quiet area to work in. We recommend giving yourself an extra 5-10 minutes prior to starting the exam to complete the Respondus setup. You will be asked to download Respondus when you begin your Canvas exam. After downloading, open the Respondus browser and go back to the Canvas Quiz using the URL bar or exam link provided. Enter the access code when you prompted to do so. Do not copy and paste. You should type in the code manually. If you would like to download Respondus and check your equipment (computer, web cam, internet) in advance, please click here.
Is there an exam fee?
- Yes, there is a $5 fee per examination paid through the registration link. There will be no refunds once payments have been made.
When should I take the exam?
- Ideally, exams should be taken at least 1 week before your Course Registration Date (new transfers) or SPOP (new first years). This ensures that we have received your exam scores and updated our files. If you cannot take an exam this far ahead, you may take the exam after your orientation date and update your schedule accordingly. You will need to contact the ICS Undergraduate Student Affairs Office to clear you for the next class.
Help! Canvas isn’t working!

- If you need technical assistance, please contact UCI Canvas Support.
How many times can I take this exam?
- You may only take each exam once.
- Re-takes and exceptions are not granted.
- You can only take one exam per session. No exceptions.
Grading Information:
- Please allow up to 2 business days for your final results to process. You will receive an email notification from the Academic Testing Center when your results are available through the results portal.
- A grade of C or higher on the exam is a passing grade.
- If you choose to accept the grade, that grade will be reflected on your official UCI transcript after grades are posted. Once you accept the grade, you cannot choose to “deny” the grade at a later time
- If you do not accept the grade, that grade will not be reflected on your transcript and you will instead enroll in the actual course
- Note: Please allow one quarter’s time for posting grades. Once processed, the grade will be applied to the quarter the exam was taken or in Fall if taken the Summer prior. (For example, if you take an exam during Summer, it will post to your Fall transcript along with the rest of your Fall grades. This change will appear during the Winter quarter.)
I received my results, what should I do?
- Grade of B- or lower: do not accept the grade and take the course instead.
- Grade of B or higher: accept the grade.
- School of ICS Majors can be cleared for enrollment in the next course once you have accepted your grade. If you take and accept the grade after your Course Registration Date (new transfers) or SPOP (new first years), please let us know so that we can clear you for the next course. Non School of ICS Majors must wait until the following winter quarter to take the next course. Non Majors would still need to wait until the school/major major restriction is lifted from our courses in order to enroll.
