Selected Service Activities
I consider myself very fortunate to have served as founding dean of the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) at the University of California–Irvine, during a time of significant growth and exciting changes in the discipline. My role as dean provided me significant experience in student outreach and retention, faculty recruitment and development, oversight and planning of teaching excellence, support and advancement of quality research, budget planning and resource allocation, fund raising and advancement, and overall leadership of academic excellence. More importantly, I focused my efforts toward increasing diversity, equity, and inclusiveness in ICS and more broadly at UCIrvine and nationally.
Having stepped down after ten years as dean, I now thoroughly enjoy spending the bulk of my service working towards activities that have the potential to increase the number and diversity of students exploring STEM fields, particularly computer science and related information technology fields – the liberal arts of the 21st century. In particular, to that end, I have always been committed to increasing the participation of women and other underrepresented minorities in computing.
Below are a few of the most important service efforts in which I have taken a leading role.
