In order to conduct a study in user interface design and implementation, 10 teams of students produced Web 2.0 applications with an optional Nokia cell phone component. Each of the teams presented their work in an American Idol style format called "Anteater Idol". The audience voted on the best applications and the best teams received a small prize for their efforts. The overall best team received an automatic 100% grade. Subsequent studies of the user interface design were conducted in a lab setting. Below is a list of the best presentations in order by their audience vote. They span the range from beautiful to technically proficient to broken :) . Not all projects work in all browsers.

This application leverages 3rd party sites to present a geographic display of the cheapest gas around your area. Highlights include an extrememly well-done user interface with process feedback, sliding drawers and clearly connected functionality. An associated cell-phone application provides almost the exact same functionality as the web-site, but with automatic queries based on your current GPS location. Leverages GasBuddy, Google Maps and Yahoo! Maps.

A class favorite, this game allows you to take control of cannon man, a self-style independent postal delivery person. Using google maps and live weather info, your goal is to shoot him to his destination. Don't waste your gunpowder, though, it's expensive. Utlizes flash animation and a great cannon control interface.

"Schedule Assistant" is for UCI students who want all their class information aggregated in one place. Figure out where your classes are going to be, what books they require and buy the book, all from one convenient, elegantly designed interface. Leverages a variety of UCI web resources.

This application is a prayer resource for Muslims. It uses your current location to determine prayer times (related to sunrise, etc.) as well as prayer directions. It also provides multi-lingual Quran support. It leverages Goolge Maps and Islamic reference sites.

One of the most innovative projects for this class was this one which help to organize and run a geo-caching contest. This application allowed an administrator and multiple players with cell phones to race to geo-caching sites. The player's positions were relayed in real time to the adminstrator's website. The administrator in turn assigned geo-cache targets for the players. Leverages geocaching sites and Google Maps.

This application finds the closest movie theatres playing the movie you want according to your specified location, plots them and provides reviews. Leverages Yahoo! movie news, Yahoo! geocoding services, and Google Maps. You never realized that this is what you wanted in a movie finder all along.

This application links Ticket Master to Google Maps. By entering your location (or by using a phone which knows your location) you can quickly and easily find the concerts that are playing near you.
