The Shabsi (Bukovska) Yitzchok Miller Family
Shabsi
(183? - 1894 [28 Nissan]), son of Pesach Dovid Miller,
was married to Esther Pinter (183? - 1892 [11 Iyar]) of Bukowsko, Galicia, and they had 10 children.
Shabsi was a very wealthy man and was politically connected with the Kaiser Franz-Joseph of the Austrian empire. Shabsi received a blessing from the Divrei Chaim (R. Chaim Halberstam of Nowy Sacz) for wealth. They had a close relationship and two of Shabsi's children married into the Sanz dynasty. Shabsi was very charitable, even paying for the entire weddings of non-family members, at the behest of the Divrei Chaim. His levaya was reported in the מחזיקי הדת, Thursday, May 17, 1894 edition.

- Sholom (1880 - 1915) married Raylah. They lived in Dobromil, Galicia & had 4 children. The entire family, except for Miriam, who moved to Israel, perished in the Holocaust. She related to me many of the details regarding Yakov Hersh's branch.

- Feiga Gittel (18? - 194?) was married to Moshe Mordcha Igolnitzer. They lived in Ulhowek, Galicia, & had 4 children. Benzion came to the US in June 1933 & took his mother's maiden name - Miller. He married Esther Klughaupt, from Ugnev, Galicia. The rest of the family perished in the Holocaust.

- Max (1890 -1967) married Lillie Rosenberg. They first lived on the lower eastside of NYC & later lived in Dearborn, MI. They had 3 children.
George, Sidney, & Robert
- Marcus (January 18, 1892 - January 2, 1957) was born in Zabolottsy, Galicia (now in Ukraine). He came to the US, via the port of NY, aboard the SS Philadelphia, on October 24, 1914. He initially went to his brother, Max, who lived on the lower East Side of NYC. In 1916, Marcus moved to Detroit, MI. He married Anna Weinstein, on November 3, 1923, and had 1 son, who became a doctor. Marcus was first a lumberman and then the owner of a laundry and dry cleaning plant.

- Yosef (c.1884 - 1941) was married to Raizel Krosberg. They lived in Dobromil, Galicia, & had 5 children. Raizel died before the war and her children were raised in Yosef's mother's (Taube Miller) house. At least some of the family (Sam & Martin) survived the war. Both Sam & Martin came to the US before the war.

- Tzlava (? - 1942?) married Beirish Hirsch. They lived in Nizhankovichi, Galicia, had no children & perished in the Holocaust.
- Shlome (1? - 1942?) married his first-cousin, Bayla. Her mother was the sister of Yakov Hersh. Her name is not known, but she was married to a grandson of the Sanz dynasty. Shlome lived in Nizhankovichi, Galicia and had 3 children. The entire
family perished in the Holocaust.

(1857/61 - 1926 [Purim]) of Bukowsko, Galicia. He was married to Brucha Kanner & they had 8 children.

- Chaim Yehuda (1875?-1944) was married to Shifra Horowitz & they had 9 children. They moved from Poland to London in 1912, where the youngest, Alec (Elisha), was born. Alec later moved to Jerusalem, where I was able to find him. He provided me with much information before his passing, in 1996.

- Susha (18? - 1942?) was married to Chaim Horowitz They lived in Rupshitz & they had 5 children. The 3 oldest children were married. The entire family perished in the Holocaust.

- Pinchus Yosef (1887 - 1941) was married twice. From his first wife, Baylah Ashkenazi, there were several children but they all perished in the Holocaust aside from Chaytchu Borenstein. His second wife was Hinda Leah Kanner. They lived in Sanok & had 4 children. Pinchus Yosef, Hinda Leah, & his children fled to Siberia during the war. Pinchus Yosef perished there, as did almost all the children of his first marriage. Hinda Leah and her children made their way to France after the Holocaust. From there they went to Netanya, Israel, except for Esther, who went to the US.
Chaytchu Borenstein, & others, including a boy, Mylech, Rechtsha, Esther Rabinowitz, & Sholom
- Avrohm (18? - 1943?) was married to Shaindle Engel, daughter of the MaHaRaSh Engel. They lived in Podgorze, a suburb of Krakow, separated from it by the river Visla. Avrohm was the menahel (principal) of a Talmud Torah there. They had 5 children. The 2 oldest were married. Shabsi, the oldest boy, was a genius and a talmid chochum.The entire family perished in the Holocaust.

- Mordche (1890 - 1970) was married to Fradle Weinfeld. They had 2 children. After the war he lived in France & then Haifa, Israel.

- Herschel (1894-1969 [Shushan Purim]) was married to Leah Lindenblatt. They had 4 children. After the war he lived in Antwerp, Belgium.

- Yoel Moshe (? - 1942?) was married to Esther Layzer. They lived in Bukowsko, Galicia, & had 8 children. The entire family perished in the Holocaust.

- Shea (? - 1942?) was married to his first cousin, Yitta Miller. She was the daughter of Pesach Dovid Miller, a brother to Shalom. They lived in Liminov, Poland & had 4 children. The entire family perished in the Holocaust.

- Avrohm
(1856/63 - Mar 24, 1924 [28 Adar]) was a Shiniva chasid. He was married twice, first to Pushka Werner. He had 3 daughters with her. Pushka died when the children were very small & they were raised by her parents.
Avrohm's second marriage was to Gittel, the daughter of Moshe Shamshon Scheindlin. On her tombstone in Vranov nad Toplou it says she passed on 5 Tishrei 5689. Avrohm lived in several places. At first he lived in Lubacov (Lubaczow). He then moved to Mudyerotska (Mudjovitz) where he built a beautiful glass and marble house. He even built a glass factory just to make the glass for the house. He came to the US to learn glass making (see Bertha Miller). He also lived in Kvakovitz. Before World War I he moved to Vranov nad Toplou. He had a tremendous estate there, which took several days to traverse on horseback. After World War I it was confiscated. He sent some of his gentile watchman back to the estate but they were murdered. Avrohm had 10 children from his second marriage and at least several were born there. His mukom menucha (place of burial) is in Presov, where he spent his final years.
- Chana (18? - ?) was married to Chaim Schnur. They may have lived in Kosice, Slovakia. They had 15 children, although not all survived to adulthood. Almost all of the family perished in the Holocaust. The living survivors can be found today in Israel and Australia.

- Malka (18? - ?) was married to a Miller. They had 2 children. There is a JewishGen marriage record from Jaroslaw that shows a Malka Miller of Piastkowa, daughter of Abraham Miller and Feiga Werner marrying 1n 1916 (akt 47) to Samuel Billig of Mosciska, son of Mayer Langsam and Machla Billig.

- Batya (18? - 1942) was married to Meir Steinbok. They had 7 children. Batya perished in the Holocaust.

- Golda (1889/90-1942?) was married to Leibleh Scharf. They lived in Presov & had 2 children; Chana & Berel. Originally they had a canned good business. Later, they had a fabric business. Golda was the bookkeeper. She had asthma but smoked special asthma cigarettes. Chana married a Blumenkranz, who also worked in the family business. They had 2 children & moved to Bardejov right before the war. Berel lived in Presov and also had two children. They all perished in the Holocaust.

- Tzevetta (1891-1977) was married to R. Dovid Nusson Lesser, the author of Michtom L'Dovid. They had 4 children & lived in Vranov nad Toplou. R. Dovid Nusson came to the US ahead of his family. He left Vranov nad Toplou on October 29th, 1922 and arrived in New York on December 19th, 1922. The rest of his family came to the U.S in the early part of 1926. They stopped off on the way in Kosice, to see my great-grandmother, Sara, her married son Shabsi Yitzchok and her youngest daughter, Viola. My great-grandfather, Pesach Dovid, was already in the United States. He visited the Lesser's frequently after they arrived.

- Esther (1895? - 1942?) was married to Yakov Yitzchok Spanglet, a monument (matzayva) maker. They lived in Vranov nad Toplou (and later Kosice ?) & had 2 children. They all perished in the Holocaust.

- Mary (1897/8 - 1948) was never married. She came to the US in the 1920's. She was 50 when she passed away, being a diabetic. She is buried in the Old Montefiore cemetery (Arjeh Benev. Society).
- Sadie (1899 - 1968) was married to Ralph Luchs. They came to the US in the late 1920's. They had no children.
- Rivka (1901? - 1942) was married to her second cousin,
Mordcha Leib Muller. Duvtcha (Pesach Dovid) Miller, the son of Avrohm Aba, the son of Yosef (Yuska M'Malcov) made her shidduch. (Duvtcha was Rivka's father's first cousin).Rivka lived in Bardejov, Slovakia, Mordca Leib's hometown, & had 2 children. They all perished in the Holocaust.

- Mindel (1902? - 1902/3?) died when she was very little, of an infection (?) that started off as a bad earache.
- Lillie (1904 - 1983) was married to Irving Klein. Her Hebrew name was Tzivia. They had twins and named them after her parents, Gittel (Gloria) and Avrohm (Alvin). They lived in Brooklyn NY.

- Shabsy (19? - 19?), drowned on his father's estate (in Vranov nad Toplou, Slovakia), when he was young.
- Shmuel (19? - 1942?) perished in the Holocaust. It is not known if he was married.

(1867/9 - 1909 [6 Iyar]) married Moshe haLevi Rebhun (son of Aron and Raizel). They lived in Bukowsko, Galicia, & had at least 7 children. They also had twins that did not survive infancy. Sarah may have been one of the twins. According to their grandson, Yankel Rebhun, Moshe Rebhun had a brother Max in the USA and a brother Mordche that was dayan in Belz.
- Pesach Dovid (1882 - 1942 [6 Elul]) was married to Malka Stern. (Incidentally, Malka Stern was a sister to Benyamin Stern, who was father-in-law to Feiga Kendel Miller). Pesach Dovid & Malka lived in Amsana (Mszana Dolna), Galicia & had 5 children. He had a wholesale glass factory. Pesach Dovid, along with his wife, perished in the mass execution of 881 martyrs in Amsana, Galicia, on August 19, 1942. Pesach Dovid's oldest daughter, Esther, married Moshe Klagsbald, a very good chazan. They lived in Krakow & had 2 girls, Yocheved Mirel and Faiga. Esther & her whole family perished in the Holocaust. The other siblings survived.

- Pinchus (188? - 19?) was named after Esther's (his mother) maternal grandfather. Pinchus married Hindy Krammer. They lived in Sanok, Galicia, & had 7 children. Their daughter, Mirel, perished in the Holocaust.

- Yankel (188? - 19?) married Sara Frandel Weinberger (sister to Beirish) from Wieliczka, Galicia, in 1915, in Krakow. Sara Frandel was a daughter of Hirsch Majer and Reisla (nee Friedman). In this way Yankel became brother-in-law to his uncle, Pinchus Miller. Very little is known about Yankel. They lived in Krakow, Poland & had 4 known children. His family perished in the Holocaust.

- Chaytchu (July 1892 - 1942) was married to her second cousin, Duvtcha Miller, son of Avrohm Aba, son of Yosef (Yuska M'Malcov), during 1918, in Amsana (Mszana Dolna). They lived in Presov and had 5 children. The only survivors were Mirtchu and Pinya. Thr rest of the family perished during the Holocaust, in Treblinka.

- Shabsi (189? - 1942?) married Rivka Rochel, the daughter of the Ruv of Bukowsko and they lived in Krakow. This is according to Mirtchu Berkowitz. However, Yankel Rebhun says Shabis's wife was the daughter of the Ruv of Ropczyce (Ropshitz). In any event, very little is known about Shabsi. The entire family perished in the Holocaust.

The 2 oldest were married; R. Shabsi Yitzchok to a Rubin, & they lived in Gdiv.

- Baila (1886 - 1983) was married to R. Avrohm Tzvi Horowitz, the Beitcha Ruv. They lived in Biecz at first, but then moved to the US. Baila would go to Europe to have her children, to keep her promise not to have any children in the US if she was going to live there. Her 2 oldest were both married before the war. Only Baila, her husband, & 1 son, R. Sholom, survived the Holocaust. The rest of the family perished in the Holocaust. I was privileged to speak with the Ruv often, before his passing in 1996. He was a wellspring of information.

They lived in Bukowsko, Galicia, & had 3 children. Pesach Dovid last lived in Wien, Austria, where he passed away. A picture of his tombstone was obtained from the Schalom organization. Most of the family perished in the Holocaust.

- Bayla Chaya (191? - 1942?) was taken away to Germany, during the war. She may have married before she perished.
- Yakov lives in Haifa, Israel. He was born in Ugnev, Galicia. In 1939 the Russians took the city and in 1940, drafted him into the army. While in Russia he married & had 1 daughter. He returned from Siberia to Poland in 1946. His wife refused to leave and he divorced her. From there he spent 21 months in the Carpathean mountains. In January 1949 he came to Israel. He remarried, to Malka, the daughter of the Rabbi of Varish (near Belz). They live in Haifa, Israel, & have 3 children. He provided me with much information regarding his grandfather, Shabsi Bukowsko.
