Appliance Design Center, Consumer Products Group
Hewlett-Packard
Donald A. Norman is an expert on the human-side of technology. He is Senior
Technical Advisor and head of the Appliance Design Center in the Consumer
Products Group of Hewlett-Packard, charged with deploying the next
generation of information appliances. Prior to his move to HP, Norman was
Vice President of the Apple Research Laboratories for Apple Computer. He is
also Professor Emeritus at the University of California, San Diego. "The
real impact of technology," says Norman, "lies in the combination of
communication and computation that affect social interaction, access to
knowledge, just-in-time learning, and enjoyment. It is ever more important to
develop technology that takes into account the needs and capabilities of
people."
Norman is the author of twelve books, with translations into twelve
languages. His most recent books are "The Design of Everyday Things," "Turn
Signals Are the Facial Expressions of Automobiles" and "Things That Make Us
Smart," all three collected together on a Voyager CD-ROM - "Defending human
attributes in the age of the machine." His newest book, "Information
Appliances" will be published in Fall, 1998, by MIT Press. In 1995, he
received an honorary degree from the University of Padua (Italy).
