History of Artificial Intelligence at JPL
Steven Doran
Flight Software Engineer at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Abstract: This presentation traces the evolutionary arc of spacecraft autonomy and robotic intelligence at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). It explores the progression from rigid, hardwired sequencing logic in early planetary exploration to the deployment of modern generative artificial intelligence and upcoming autonomous multi-agent swarm. By migrating operational reasoning from ground stations directly onto deep-space hardware, JPL’s legacy of innovation continues to redefine what is possible in extreme planetary environments—moving away from teleoperation toward fully self-directed planetary scouts.
Bio: Mr. Steven Doran has over 25 years of experience in both the development and leadership of embedded flight software for programs such as the F-22, Space Based InfraRed System (SBIRS), Mars Helicopter and classified systems. Steve is currently assigned to JPL’s Embedded Flight Software group to develop new Fight Software concepts for future NASA/JPL missions.
