What is a minor?

A minor is an established set of courses which together take a student beyond the introductory level in an academic field, subject, and/or discipline. Minors allow students to pursue an area of personal interest or a focused study in an additional subject that complements their major or career goals.

A minor in the computer science field can help prepare students for a profession, career, or academic pursuit in which computer science is an integral part but is not the primary focus.

Steps for adding a minor

REVIEW the requirements for the minor you want to add.

MEET with an advisor if you need help creating a plan to meet the minor requirements.

ADD the minor to your DegreeWorks. ICS majors can submit the “ICS DegreeWorks Update Form” on our website, and non-ICS majors can reach out to an advisor in their major school to request to add the minor.

Please note:

  • There are no prerequisites required to declare an ICS minor.
  • ICS majors should review the “Majors and Minors Restrictions Chart” above, as some major/minor combinations are not allowed.
  • Non-ICS majors will not be given priority to enroll in ICS courses in order to complete minor requirements.
  • Only an advisor from your school can add or remove a minor for you. However, you can reach out to an advisor in the school that corresponds with your minor if you have questions about your minor requirements.

Can courses overlap between ICS majors & minors?

The new policy (listed below) will apply to all ICS students who add a minor in the School of ICS starting Fall 2025.
