Inaugural UC Irvine Research Forum Series Focuses on Developer Experience


The inaugural UC Irvine Research Forum Series – Developer Experience was held May 15 in Donald Bren Hall at UC Irvine Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS). The forum gathered researchers, industry leaders and practitioners to discuss the latest developments in software and information technology and was open to all faculty, staff, students and industry partners. Event organizers included the Institute of Software Research, Software Engineering & Testing Using Artificial Intelligence for Reliable Software (STAIRS) Lab, and Capybara Science Lab on the Future of Software and the event was sponsored by SAP.

The forum speakers shared insights on how software engineering is evolving in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). Speakers included Cat Hicks (Catharsis Consulting), Eirini Kalliamvakou (GitHub), Lizzie Matusov (Quotient), Olga Lvova (JetBrains), Rui Abreu (Meta), Tobias Schimmer (SAP), and Yanina Ledovaya (JetBrains).
A highlight of the event was a rare in-person reunion of the original authors of the SPACE Framework, a complete guide to developer productivity. The SPACE panel included Nicole Forsgren (Google), Margaret-Anne Storey (University of Victoria), Chandra Madilla (Meta), Thomas Zimmermann (University of California, Irvine), Brian Houck (DX), and Jenna Butler (Microsoft). Guests enjoyed a reception following the event.
